I just started reading the book “Expanding job opportunities in Ghana” by Maddalena Honorati and Sarah Johansson de Silva.
From the little I have gathered so far, it promises to be an interesting read.
In the overview, a few statements catch my attention:
-“Ghana was, until very recently, a success story on the African continent,
achieving high and sustained growth and impressive poverty reduction”
-“In the same period, Ghana also created a considerable number of jobs
while increasing total labor productivity, especially between 2005 and 2012.”
Being a Ghanaian living in Ghana, I’m curious to find out what metrics those conclusions were based on.
It’s interesting that many insightful books on life in Ghana are written by foreigners. Is it a reflection of the ignorance of many Ghanaians about their own problems ?
The picture on the cover page of the book is that of two old women seated on the floor, stirring what looks like shear butter in a huge pan, an old little structure behind them. Around the time the book was written, there were certainly young Ghanaian entrepreneurs into innovative startups in technology and other promising fields. Why was that picture chosen amidst so many others as the best picture that showcases expanding job opportunities in Ghana ?
Next week, I shall bring you more details from the book. Stay tuned!
