This week, I was honored to be chosen as Poet of the Week for this week’s Wea’ve Written Weekly hosted by David.

Special thanks to Sally for nominating me.

Here is my take on the prompt :

the room heaves with my sighs
its walls browning from the stewing solitude
as I listen harder pass the noise outside
I hear the familiar footsteps of loneliness
returning to its old friend

it knows where to find me
when I’m done drifting through the masked masses

today its footsteps are slow
as if scared I’ve finally found the warmth of another human

it’s just me and myself, as usual
envying the dead when times are bad
wearing the hypocritical smile when the tides turn
and I’m suddenly glad to be alive

I’ve always thought a person was either good or bad
never thought there will come a day I wouldn’t know what I am

I know not what all this is trying to teach me

  3. Powerful and honest post, Benji. Humans are not just good or bad, Benji. They are beyond that. There are thousands of shades of grey. IMO.

  4. This is a powerful and very honest look at yourself, at the way we hid in our masks among the others, until we decide to get real about it. Really wonderful piece.

  5. There is deep poignancy to this poem. The narrator’s last line speaks toward them being a bit of tortured soul.

  6. Benjamin, from the first line “the room heaves with my sighs” I knew your poem was going to be heart-aching. What moves me most is how the poem treats loneliness as a familiar presence. The gentleness of that recognition makes the sorrow even sharper.

  7. Benji, what stands out most is how you make loneliness feel like a person who knows where to find you, but also seems afraid you may finally find warmth with someone else.

BTW, please don’t forget to post this on Mister Linky! ❤
