Around the new year of 2022, I watched a 1950s movie titled “September Affair”, a romantic drama ditected by William Dieterle.
The movie was about two passengers, a married man on the verge of divorce (Joseph Cotten) and a single woman (Joan Fontaine), who while engaging in a long warm chat, missed their flight. To kill time, they took a tour of the town, Naples in Italy.
They later discovered in a newspaper that the plane they were supposed to board crushed, killing everyone. Presumed dead, and falling in love during their brief time together, they decided to start a new life together in Florence.
The ex wife of the newly married man chanced upon certain clues that indicated her husband might still be alive, and she kept digging till she found out where he was living in Florence, although on arriving at his house she met the new woman. Coincidentally, the man had gone out.
The scene inspired me to write a poem titled, “Your past came knocking” :
Your past came knocking
It came with a message
packaged in the person of your Ex
The urge to open it was strong
But I resisted
Wanted you to read it
and tell me what it means for usβ¦
Looking at the poem today, I felt the poem should have ended right there. I made some additions that I feel didn’t blend in naturally with the tone and mood of the opening stanza.
But I always believe that creative writing is a work in progress. We grow and get better with time.
Below is the link to the full poem. Feel free to make suggestions about the continuation of the poemβ¦or write what you think should be a rewording of the poem.
