dry your tears

He’s asked that she dry her tears and smile
but how can she, in the midst of so much pain?
while they talk, she’s distracted
by the singing of her patients
a favorite song of her lover gone on a long journey
whose many letters have trickled to a few
the song comes to her
like some lonesome puppy recognizing its master in a crowd
she and her lover once strolled hand in hand the green fields in their little town
singing this very tune
fields fresh, green, blossoming like their newfound love
now she has to hope and wait for his return
despite the premonitions in her heart that he might never return
