He was planted among us on purpose, but we did not know. He came across as honest, complaining just like the rest of us of the hardships we all faced. We assumed he was one of us.

It started with my resignation. He was the first to call.

I still remember where I was when he called. Beside a little shop, where I had just bought some snacks after roaming for hours in the hot morning sun, contemplating whether to pass by the beach or not since some beach resorts where not far from where I stood.

He told me he heard I had resigned, and of how disappointed he was in my boss. He said God will reward my efforts of so many years and that he together with a few other grateful people will put together something as a “thank you” envelope for me.

I listened carefully over the phone, convinced that this was a genuinely concerned fellow. It was not my habit to reveal the true cause of my departure. Silence was my style. But this was one  out of a million ingrates who showed that he cared. I told him, everything.

If only I knew, I would have shut this lousy mouth of mine.

Taken me many years looking back to notice the wolf among us sheep. Now that I think over everything that happened, I now understand why he was everywhere, going with the executives to explore new workplaces as if he too was frustrated of the old place and was hungry for change.

All the good ones have left. What was his reason for staying back all these years ?

I see pictures of him, and our former boss, celebrating new milestones.

I’ve always told myself that a circle dedicated to gossiping and slandering others soon reaches that moment when there is no dog to drown and the only thing left to do is sink into backbiting; nothing for the rabbit to chew to keep its incissors from overgrowing except chew itself to death.

Just watching those two birds of a feather. One of these days their dirty pants will be lying in the open for all to see, like the anus of the fowl exposed in harmattan winds.
