
It’s a sad trend. You set up a school, and to convince parents to enroll their children, you must prove the percentage of students who pass the final exams conducted nationally.
School has become big time business. And so, schools will go to all lengths to get parents to enroll their children.
Students know that schools are sensitive to their image and their records when it comes to students’ performance in final year exams. This knowledge now allows them to exploit the school in indirect ways.
A teacher comes to class, a student is busy making noise at the back of the class with his or her friends. In the past, all the teacher needs to do, is call the student to the front, inject a couple of whips into his or her back, and the student was cured of nonsense.
But now, whipping has been banned in schools. Already, children are difficult to handle and needs some form of strictness for them to grow into responsible adults. The removal of any form of punishment and discipline is like rewriting the manual of a machine that hasn’t undergone any changes, expanding its uses without altering its capabilities. How can such a machine properly serve its function without complications?
Every year, schools teach their students to desist from examination malpractices and yet during final year exams, as part of steps to maintain their record of being a top school, the same schools lead their students in a battle of double standards to secure academic victory.
These are the same institutions we hope will train our children to not be corrupt, to be citizens of integrity. We hope our children will learn some old principles of success like discipline, hardwork, sacrifice, and dedication from these institutions.
We have created for ourselves systems to mint us into hypocrites. And that is pathetic.
