Christmas seasons were memorable times. There were a number of reasons why.

Certain animation movies were only shown around Christmas time, and they were super exciting to watch. There were special family movies around the same time.

I remember one Sunday we returned from Sunday school to meet an unusual film on Ghana Television. It was about a woman who lived in the bush with her tribe. She led hunting expeditions for pigs in the wild. It was very exciting for us kids because we had never seen a woman hunter and the plot was not the kind we were accustomed to.

Another Sunday, there was a black American movie about two brothers. The junior hated the senior brother, even though the senior one loved loved his brother unconditionally despite their differences.

One day while combing their neighborhood, the elder brother noticed some thugs on a motorbike. One took out a pistol and aimed it at the junior of the two brothers. The elder brother run and covered his brother, taking the bullets meant for his brother and died on the scene.

The surviving brother couldn’t stand the incident, considering how mean he had always been to his senior brother.

There were great movies we saw when we were young that really shaped us as we grew up. Sometimes, I have the feeling that the movies we see these days are not of the quality they used to be. The morals and concepts and stories they brought out are missing in many of today’s movies.

There were  great nollywood movies at the time that taught insightful lessons. Most of the time, we hardly kept their titles but we remembered the storyline so well that anyone who had ever watched the movies and knew their titles could tell which movie we were talking about.

There were movies that were fascinating for us as kids. There were Texas Ranger, Beastmaster, Passions, Journey to the West and My Wife and Kids. Later in life, upon rewatching some of those series, some appear really dull but in our childhood they were really great. Perhaps because we’ve seen so many other movies along the way.

Movies and the good food mom prepared for us, contributed immensely to our enjoyment of the holidays.

We were already having fun at home playing all day when our parents were out. Christmas was in a few days time. And if the before Christmas was this fun, we couldn’t wait to see Christmas day itself and the days leading to the 31st watch night…
