I remember the first day your luggage was brought in

You were newly married to a man you’ve never met

A strange man who had a room in his house he forbade you from entering

And who never saw your nakedness

I was your servant

Curiosity and loneliness recommended me to you

I remember that night you sneaked into my apartment

And saw me painting

I knew why you came

And for helping you find the answers you sought

You allowed me paint you, half naked

You are no more

But anytime I stand before this board

I see you, a flower in one hand

Ineffable gratitude in the other

For all the trouble we’ve been through together
