It’s Our Day
the last day of the semester for pupils
every child carries a basket of food, drinks and smiles, dancing cheerfully
and tugging at their parents’ dress
heading to school

my little sister watch them pass by
she’s told mom she won’t be going
which is so unlike her
unlike the rest
I watch her, thinking
perhaps God is shielding her from some unforeseen harm
by knocking every interest in the festivities at school from her heart

her case reminds me
of people who have no drive for adventure
when others are excited about prospects of traveling, of seeing new places, meeting new people
they prefer  escorting others to train stations
happy to return to their daily lives in their corner

I used to feel sad for such people
who seemed content with their simple private lives
but now, I realize those people are at the finish line that we are racing hard towards
for one day, we too will come to that point

where we see how  pointless it is
constantly searching
running wild

and when we finally slow down
we will begin to see the many things a quiet life lived in one place has in store for us
