Mother,
your sacrifices
are unforgettable
like the lines and prints in my palms
You saw value
in a premature baby
An infant many would have abandoned
You traveled in every direction for healers
in search of herbal doctors to cure your son
What many would have rejected
You nurtured into a full grown man like me
You were the color
in my colorful Christmases
If December brings me nostalgia
for my childhood days, it’s thanks to you
And the aroma of the best meals you made
If our home has stood
against so many that fell
It’s because you’ve offered yourself
To be the pillar of God holding it all together
On days we were broke
In the middle of the semester
You showed up, with foodstuff
And encouragement, to keep us going
Even in the fights and quarrels
We saw love that was unconditional
If I hired ten thousand poets
And paid them with eternity to sing your deeds
A millennium would arrive to find them still searching
For the right tune to begin singing of deeds that have no end
