Majitey suggested it first. No one thought of it as a possibility although a few members of the board heard of it as a joke by one Nigerian comedian.

Make the Lord’s Supper a full meal. Sounded funny and absurd. They all thought Majitey was joking when he mentioned it. But he wasn’t smiling while he explained the idea. What even made him say such a thing? They all wondered.

One thing was sure, that the Chairman would brush it aside as something to be looked into later. For some strange reasons, the Chairman liked the idea, as amusing as it sounded. Perhaps because of the recent tensions in church regarding one student’s application for a scholarship. Maybe this news will lighten things up.

Last Sunday of the month, the idea would be put into practice. Two weeks to go, yet so much to do.

In place of the little spoonful communion wine each member takes together with a tiny wafer, a big meal was going to be used. It was undecided what meal in particular it should be. And how much it would cost.

Some church members were already complaining of multiple offerings taken at church services that never benefit them in anyway whereas there were so many hungry people in church.

There was a reason it was called “Supper”, a member of the council reminded everyone, and that if they were to follow the Bible strictly, it had to be something that could satisfy.

Someone even said the larger the meal, the more it might motivate church members to live godly lives as they wouldn’t want to miss the sumptuous meals, the Holy Communion.

Not every member of the council was in support of this move. Some thought the rest were going nuts. The church had important problems to solve instead of presiding over the size of meals.

Others also thought some church members  who do not qualify to participate in the communion would be tempted to eat out of hunger and poverty whereas the Holy Communion was meant for the devout.

Mrs. Hillford raised an issue. If the token supper of wine and wafer was going to be converted into a big meal, what happened to participants allergic to certain food ingredients?

Everyone at the council was initially quiet and then suddenly erupted into commotion.

If people came to the Lord’s table with faith that after eating the Lord’s body and drinking his blood, they were going to healed and receive spiritual strength, why worry of food allergies?

That was what Mr. Tuffour said that got many really upset.

“The fact that we are in the house of God doesn’t mean we shouldn’t eat responsibly.” One elder on the council blurted, sending the gathering into another round of heated arguments.

Mr. Sam was quiet. He knew that if he spoke in favor of the new move, he would be accused of acting in his personal interest instead of the good of the entire church since his wife operated the church’s restaurant.

The chairman realized the new move was only moving the church into chaos and decided to adjourn the meeting.
