The picture of a deceased wife, on the wall.
Seems to stare at the new woman in the home whenever she passes by it.
It’s like a living picture, a window through which the dead the old wife could still monitor the affairs of her home from the underworld.
It seems to frown whenever things were getting warm and sweet between her and her new husband. And there appears some sort of smile on its face whenever the new couple have petty quarrels simmering into larger ones.
Or was she imagining it all in her head?
She hates to be left in the house alone. Something about that large house of theirs. Its large rooms were filled with emptiness and something else she couldn’t name.
Passersby might envy her, thinking how lucky she must be replacing the former wife, with so much comfort and luxury at her disposal.
She could not tell for sure if she was happy in this new marriage. Perhaps, she needed a little time to be sure. But this wasn’t what she had expected her new home to look like.
A large lifeless home.
Was it too late to change her mind?
“Darling, take it down.” She told her husband one day in a quivering voice when he caught her staring at the picture.
“Monica, you know that it’s not possible.” her husband reminded her.
Of course she knew. That his deceased wife meant so much to him, and that it took lots of years and persuasion for him to remarry. That picture was symbolic to him.
But there was something in that picture that haunted her. Could it be the wrath of an angry ghost? Was the dead woman jealous that someone had taken her place?
Was she the only one in the house feeling the oddness of the looks in the picture?
Her husband doesn’t talk about the cause of the death of his wife.
There are various versions of the story in circulation but the most credible would be from a source close to the victim in question.
Unfortunately, he wouldn’t talk about it.
This new marriage had changed her perspectives a lot about rich homes and peace of mind.
