It’s an empty market

Hungry, I hurry to the market
All along the way, I imagine the things I'll buy
Occasionally drifting off to think of other things
I arrive
An empty market greets me
How?!
Oh! I suddenly remember why
As I look up to windows
Of nearby hostels
All shut, except a few squeaking in the gentle winds
It's vacation today for the students
Damn!
Where do I get food?
But the silence of the empty market
Punctuated by occasional chirping, hooting
And wailing of birds
A gruesome reminder of things
I do not want to think about
Winds rustle leaves, empty bottles and used tissues
I hear footsteps of some disappointed customers
Returning as they came
They say a word or two about the strangeness of the silence
I try to ignore the message in all this
Yet the silence and emptiness is too loud
To be ignored
It's my reminder
That one day, all of this will be gone
That all of this busyness will cease
