Sarah and Cliff. They’d only been apart for a week and Cliff already had a new woman hanging off his arm.

The news was hard to swallow, but it came from a reliable gossip.

Cliff must be out of his mind!

We set off to his house to give him a piece of our mind. I, Joanna and Jeff.

How could he do this to Sarah after all they’ve been through together?

And this new woman, this whore, if we ever set eyes on her, she could count on us to do her one favor: inject sense into her fucking head!

All along the way we just couldn’t make any sense of it all. Sarah had a good body shape, she was fun to be with and very thoughtful and considerate. Cliff was a great guy we all respected. He’d never done such a thing. What could have pushed him, and why were Sarah and Cliff both silent about the cause of their breakup? Why was the breakup a day after Sarah’s fibroid operation? Why would a responsible guy like Cliff break up with a long time girlfriend at a moment she needed him most?

And this new woman. Had she been in the background all this while? Why wasn’t she afraid to hang out in public with Cliff knowing the kind of friends Sarah had. Friends who could maim a boyfriend snatcher without fear of going to jail.

What’s happening in this country? Every now and then there’s a story of one woman snatching another’s husband. Were there indeed shortage of men as the recent research suggested?

And Cliff, at his age and after the many women he’d been with before meeting Sarah, what was it he hadn’t seen down there that only this new woman had?

Joanna and Jeff plucked up branches of a nim tree with which they hoped to spell out their disappointment in italics on this new woman’s face and back. And if God permits, on her buttocks and thighs. A beating she shall always remember even in the afterlife.

There we were. In Cliff’s house. And guess who welcomed us? The new woman.

Gosh! She was pretty. Very. Her beauty and politeness mellowed us. For a moment we seemed to have forgotten our mission. It was no pretense. It was courtesy and civility cultivated over years, with their fruits showing in how she walked, talked and treated us, to some snacks she had baked. My God! She was an excellent cook too!

Oh, Sarah! You’ve put us in a difficult position.

We came here to flush this new woman out of Cliff’s house and reinstate our old friend Sarah. And now, the mission wasn’t as easy as we had enthusiastically set out to accomplish…
